What Age Should a Child Be in a Car Seat? 

Any child under 12 must use a car seat unless they are over 135 centimetres/4 foot and 6 inches tall. 

Once your child is over 15 months old, they can use a forward-facing seat, but it’s recommended to keep your child rear-facing; this is the safest position for a child, reducing the risk of head and neck injury.  

What Car Seat Does My Child Need? 

Once your child is over 4 years old, you will want to put them in a Group 2 or a Group 3 child car seat. 

• Group 0+ seats are designed for newborns to 15 months. Group 1 seats are for children between 9 months to 4 years. 
• Group 2 seats are suitable for children between 4 and 6, and 15-25 kg (33-55 lb). 
• Group 3 seats are suitable for children between 4 and 10, and 22-36 kg (48-76 lb). 

Some child car seats are advertised as Group 2/3. These seats can adapt as your child grows, offering better safety and removing the need to buy another car seat once your child grows out of their Group 2 seat. 

Should I Choose a Child Car Seat With ISOFIX? 

All cars manufactured since 2014 (except for two-seater cars) come with ISOFIX points that act as anchor points for your child’s car seat and keep the seat securely in place. The system also makes it easier to install the car seat: it’s less tricky than using the adult seat belt, and you’ll enjoy a higher degree of certainty that the seat is installed correctly.
